A town of the Baix Vinalopó at the foot of the Serra de Crevillent, with a craft tradition in esparto and rush that gave rise to its carpet industry.
traditional vineyard (undated); recovery 2019, first wines 2023The vineyard returning to the Serra de Crevillent
There were always vines in the ravines of the Serra de Crevillent, although more for home use and bulk sale than for trade. Oriol Romeu's family knows this well: his grandfather and great-grandfather went from village to village selling wine, until the household switched to table grapes and the craft was lost for a generation. In 2019 Oriol decided to recover his grandfather's almost abandoned vineyards in the mountains, rescued the monastrell vines that remained on the field margins and planted forcallat blanc, arcos and verdil. The first grapes came in 2022 and the wines reached the market in 2023. The family story is oral memory collected by the press; the reintroduction, by contrast, is dated.
