A village of the Vinalopó Mitjà, possibly with an Arabic name, which grew around the marquisate of La Romana (1739) and separated from Novelda in 1929.
First mention: In 1449, when the barony of Novelda was founded, La Romana appears as part of it.
The legend
barony of Novelda 1449; marquisate 1739; separation 1929; sale to settlers 1930When the marquis sold the land to the settlers
La Romana, whose name some have sought to derive from the Arabic for “the pomegranates”, appears in 1449 as part of the barony of Novelda. From 1739 its lands, with a small Morisco population, were the seat of the marquisate of La Romana, and the village grew up around the marquis's estate. In 1929 the village separated from Novelda and, around 1930, the marquis sold the land to the settlers and tenants who worked it. Those farmers, now owners, are the basis of the village's present-day agriculture: bagged table grapes of the Vinalopó, almonds, olives and wine grapes, now made into wine by the local cooperative winery. It is reasonable to link those settlers to the founding of the cooperative, although this is not documented.
Alive today: La Bodega Cooperativa de La Romana and the vineyards of bagged table grapes (DOP Uva de mesa embolsada Vinalopó), as well as vines for wine.
