In the rural district of Matola, in the Camp d'Elx, the farmhouses known as faenetas had their own afollaor, the small press where grapes were trodden by foot. According to the family itself, in 1930 grandfather Rafael, nicknamed Faelo, began treading his harvest there, and the wine was sold in bulk for seventy years. In 2000 his descendant Jaime Soto and his father decided to bottle it at home and combine old craft with modern technique; today the fourth generation grows some two and a half hectares of monastrell and moscatel, among other varieties, in Matola and Crevillent, and still treads grapes in the old press. It is a modest family story, told mainly by the winery, with no archival document behind it.
Alive today: Bodegas Faelo (“La Dama” wines), which preserves the house afollaor and offers wine tourism visits in Matola.
