A town of the Murcian Altiplano whose original core stood on the Castle hill, occupied from the Bronze Age by Iberians and Romans. In Andalusi times it was the city of Ğumalla; after the Christian conquest of the 13th century the population moved down from the 15th century onwards to the old outskirts.
First mention: As Ğumalla/Gumalla (the Arabic form of a probably Latin name) it first appears in 13th-century Arabic texts, according to Carmona González (“Yakka-Gumalla-Bilyana”, Yakka 3, 1991); the specific text is not identified.

On the plain of El Prado, beside the centre of Jumilla, archaeologists excavating a Copper Age settlement found several pips of the cultivated grape species, Vitis vinifera. Their dating to the third millennium BC made Jumilla one of the places on the peninsula with the oldest evidence of the use of the vine, and the Consejo Regulador presents them as the oldest in Europe. From there the local story links together Iberians, Greeks, Romans and Muslims: a pair of gold earrings shaped like bunches of grapes from the 4th century BC is cited as proof that the grape already had symbolic value. Centuries later, when phylloxera devastated France at the end of the 19th century, Jumilla enjoyed a boom exporting must and wine to its neighbour.
Alive today: Jumilla is the seat of the Consejo Regulador of the DOP Jumilla (established in 1961, regulations of 1966), one of the first in Spain, centred on Monastrell. Every August it holds the Grape Harvest Festival, held without interruption since 1972 and of Regional Tourist Interest, with the wine fountain in the Plaza de Arriba and the treading of the grapes. It has a Wine Museum and some thirty bodegas on its wine route.
