The legend
place name 1470; municipality 1933; cooperative c. 1970; Fondillón vintage 1955The Fondillón of the Cañada de la Alheña
Algueña takes its name from the “Cañada de la Alheña”, mentioned in 1470 in a memorial to Ferdinand the Catholic about the boundaries between Orihuela and Jumilla. For centuries it was a farming hamlet of Pinoso, and the growth of the late 19th century, linked to the vineyard, led it to break away as a municipality in 1933. Today its cooperative, whose history goes back to 1970 according to the press, brings together more than 400 members and some 2,300 hectares of vines, mostly monastrell. It is one of the houses keeping alive Fondillón, the old rancio wine of Alicante: it released a 1980 solera made with grapes from Algueña, Pinoso and La Romana, and its catalogue also includes 1955 and 1996 vintages. Fondillón's ancient fame is regional tradition; what is documented in Algueña is the cooperative and its soleras.
Alive today: Bodega Cooperativa de Algueña, with vintage Fondillón and dry-farmed monastrell
