The legend
dry-farmed terraces 18th century; winegrowers since 2018; natural wine fair since 2023The dry-farmed vineyard of Pego
Pego is a land of rice fields and orange groves: the marshland and irrigated farming have shaped its history since the settlement charter of 1279. But on the unirrigated slopes, according to the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, olives, carobs, almonds and vines grow side by side, largely on terraces opened up in the 18th century. No documentation of historic wineries in the municipality has been found, and the Marina Alta's raisin tradition was centred on Dénia and the coast. Pego's vineyard is being spoken of again in the 21st century, with artisan winegrowers such as Aida i Lluís, a project born in 2018 with moscatel and giró, and with a natural wine fair that held its third edition in 2025.
