The legend
vineyard planted in the early 1970s; garage winery 2019The old Malvasía and Giró vines
La Nucía, an old farmstead that James I granted in 1271 and that became a municipality in 1705 on separating from the barony of Polop, was a farming village of almonds, olives and market gardens, which between 1845 and 1922 lost two thirds of its population to emigration to Algiers and Oran. No documentation of its own early viticulture has been found; local gastronomy mentions the “wines of La Marina” and mistela. What is documented is recent: in 2018 Celler Mar de Vins rescued a vineyard of Malvasía and Giró planted, according to the winery, in the early seventies, unirrigated on clay soils, and in 2019 it made its first vintage in a small garage winery; since 2021 it has submerged part of its wine in the sea.
Alive today: Celler Mar de Vins and its old Malvasía and Giró vineyard
