The legend
cooperative 1946; winery 1950; relocation 2008The winery of the 1946 cooperative
Beneath the castle that James I incorporated into the Kingdom of Valencia in 1244, the Foia de Castalla was dry-farmed land: almond, olive and, to a lesser extent, vine. In 1946 the farmers of Castalla founded their cooperative to defend their interests, and a few years later, in 1950, work began on the new winery, followed by the oil mill (1951), a fertiliser store and a credit section. The winery was modernised in 1996 with stainless steel tanks, and in 2008 all the facilities moved to the industrial estate. It is a modest and recent history, but one documented by the cooperative itself: that of wine made in common by the farmers of a town that today lives mainly from the toy and furniture industries.
Alive today: Cooperativa de Castalla, with winery and oil mill
