Capital of the province of the same name, on a rocky plateau on the banks of the Duero. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, it was resettled in 893 by order of Alfonso III with Mozarabs from Toledo and became a stronghold of the kingdom of León.
First mention: The Suevic Parochiale (c. 569) mentions “Senimure” in the diocese of Astorga, which is identified with Zamora. The Antonine Itinerary mentions the mansio Ocelo Duri, sometimes identified with Zamora, although others place it at Villalazán.
The legend
exchange of vineyards, 1219; revenues from Zamora's “Christian” wine, 1481 (privilege of Henry IV); DO, 2007The vineyards of San Salvador and the “Christian” wine of Zamora
The Tierra del Vino was the vineyard of the city of Zamora, and its parchments prove it. On 24 February 1219, the Zamora church of San Salvador ceded to the knight Lope Peláez one hundred maravedíes and the village of Corporales. In exchange it received two yugadas of land in Éntrala and fifteen aranzadas of vineyards in Éntrala, El Perdigón and Morales del Vino, villages that still lie within the appellation today. In those same years a local woman donated part of her vineyards in Valle Cavata to San Salvador. Two and a half centuries later, in 1481, the Catholic Monarchs ordered the tax farmers of Zamora's revenues to hand over two thousand maravedíes to the Poor Clares of Benavente. The money came from the revenues on the city's “Christian” wine, under an earlier privilege granted by Henry IV. The originals are kept in the Provincial Historical Archive of Zamora.
Alive today: Zamora is the capital of the district and falls within the area of DO Tierra del Vino de Zamora (2007). Within its municipal boundaries is Bodegas Valcabadino, a winery and restaurant beside the N-122 that appears on the Regulatory Council's list of wineries. Éntrala, El Perdigón and Morales del Vino, the villages of the 1219 vineyards, also remain within the appellation.
