The legend
donation of Cárdaba to Arlanza, 937; vineyards in the accounts of 1337–1338; grange of Sacramenia from 1488; Redreja family bodega more than a century oldThe hundred cántaras of the priory of Cárdaba
On the Segovian upland, beside the Duratón, stands the church of Santa María de Cárdaba, which Count Fernán González and his wife Sancha donated in 937 to the Burgos monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza. The monks of the priory worked the lands of the estate, and among their crops was the vine: the monastery's accounts for 1337–1338 record an annual harvest of some one hundred cántaras of wine. A century later only two monks remained, and in 1488 the estate passed as a grange to the Cistercian monastery of Sacramenia until the disentailment of 1835. In the village of Valtiendas, the street called Las Bodegas recalls the wine presses and underground cellars with earthenware jars where families trod the grapes and aged their reds and rosés.
Alive today: Valtiendas gives its name to the DOP Valtiendas, headquartered at its town hall, one of the highest areas of the Duero, where reds and rosés are made from Tempranillo. Bodegas working in the municipality include Tinto Redreja, built on an old family wine press, Bodegas Ribera del Duratón, Vagal, Valviña and Finca Cárdaba, which replanted the old monastic estate in 1999.
