A village in the southern highlands of Tenerife, in the Guanche district of Chasna. It grew up around the hermitage of San Pedro built in 1533 by the Catalan settler Pedro Soler and his wife Juana de Padilla, a parish from 1568; since 2014 it has officially been called Vilaflor de Chasna.
First mention: A land grant of 11 July 1504 mentions the water ‘which is called, in the language of Tenerife, Chasna’ (E. Serra Ràfols, Las Datas de Tenerife, 1978). The form Villaflor/Vilaflor appears in the second half of the 16th century.
The legend
lordship of Chasna, 16th century; wine documented in 1676 (Núñez de la Peña); coat of arms with grape cluster 1992; DO 1996Little wine and many flocks: the highest vineyards of Chasna
Vilaflor was born in the 16th century as the head of the lands of Chasna, high in the south of Tenerife, among pine forests at almost 1,400 metres. In 1676 the chronicler Juan Núñez de la Peña, from La Laguna, in his ‘Conquest and Antiquities of the Islands of Gran Canaria’, described the place as a land of many flocks and much wheat, but of “little wine”: the vine was already there, though on a small scale and almost always for household use. Viera y Clavijo, a century later, and Madoz in 1850 spoke of its wheat, its waters and its fruit trees without mentioning the vine. That modest vineyard survived on terraces of stone and jable, and today it is the highest in the DO Abona: the bunch of grapes appears on the municipal coat of arms, approved in 1992.
Alive today: High-altitude vineyards in La Escalona, Trevejos and Los Quemados within the DO Abona; the vine and the potato remain the agricultural mainstay of the municipality. Bodega Eugenio Reverón Sierra (Bodegas Reverón), in Los Quemados, is registered with the Regulatory Council.
