A town in the east of the province of Ávila, in the Alberche valley and on the northern slope of the Sierra de Gredos, the heart of the DOP Cebreros. Documented since 1301, it came under the jurisdiction of Ávila until it obtained the title of villa (town) in 1562, under Philip II.
First mention: In 1301 Ferdinand IV granted the town of Cebreros to his uncle, Prince John; Wikipedia gives this as the first reliable historical reference, without citing the document.
The legend
manuscript of the Bishop of Ávila, 1275; commercial boom, 16th century; Sociedad Vinícola Cebrereña, 19th–20th centuries; phylloxera 1909The Bishop of Ávila's vineyards and the Sociedad Vinícola Cebrereña
The Garnacha and Albillo vines that grow among the granite on the slopes of the Alberche have a medieval pedigree: the history of the appellation begins with a manuscript of 1275 in which the Bishop of Ávila grants vineyards to be cultivated in these lands. In the 16th century its wine was sold in Madrid and Ávila and brought prosperity to the town. In the 19th century the growers founded the Sociedad Vinícola Cebrereña, which came to have a bank, a library and even medical insurance for its members. Phylloxera arrived late, in 1909, and advanced so slowly in the sandy soils that ungrafted vines survived until the mid-20th century.
Alive today: Cebreros gives its name to the DOP Cebreros, the first wine appellation in the province of Ávila, definitively registered in 2019, and houses its headquarters on Calle San Marcial. Old Garnacha and Albillo Real vineyards, many over 50 years old, sustain a new generation of artisan bodegas in the town.
