A town of the Vinalopó Mitjà, born from the Andalusi hamlet of Bitrir and its 12th-century castle; Castilian in 1244 and Valencian from 1304–1305.
First mention: The Treaty of Almizra (1244) set the border and Petrer remained in Castile; the Andalusi castle dates from the second half of the 12th century.
The legend
cooperative 1908; San Isidro winery 1953; Bocopa in Petrer 1990The twenty-four farmers of 1908
In 1908 twenty-four farmers from Petrer founded an Agricultural Union and Rural Savings and Loan Bank to buy what they needed together; by 1912 its first oil mill was already pressing. Wine, on the other hand, remained spread among hundreds of small wineries in houses and fields across the municipality, until in the early 1950s the cooperative helped finance the Bodega de Viticultores San Isidro, whose premises on the avenida de Elda opened in 1953 to centralise production. In the mid-1980s the two bodies merged. In 1990 Bocopa arrived in Petrer, founded in 1987 by a group of Alicante wineries, and moved its bottling plant there from Pinoso. Thus the town went from hundreds of home wineries to being the seat of two cooperatives.
Alive today: La Bodega Cooperativa Agrícola de Petrer (“La Coope”) and Bocopa, which makes fondillón, reds and sparkling wines in Petrer.
