For centuries Llíber was a dependency of Xaló, within the valley that medieval documents call the “vallis de Xalo”. A document of 1472, cited by Coromines, records the sale by the valley's alamín of a hundred quintals of raisins, proof that the Mudéjar peasants of the valley were already drying grapes for the market. In 1609 Llíber had 25 Morisco households; after their expulsion, settlers from Majorca arrived. The grape remained the main crop, for raisins and moscatel, and the riuraus dotted across the Pla de Llíber recall that trade. Over one of them, in 1900, the winery of the Abargues estate was built, where Pepe Mendoza now makes wine with giró and moscatel planted between 1920 and 1970.
